Your Secret Self

How To Unfetter The Person You Were Meant To Be

Book by Christina Bellsmith - Canadian Motivational Speaker

Do not read this book! Do not read it if you are brimming over with joy and if you are happy at every level of your life. Do not read it if your relationships are strong. Do not read it if your work is totally satisfying. Do not read it if you are living your life purpose. Especially do not read it if all your dreams have been fulfilled. If all of these things are true for you, you are probably already practising the principles contained in this book. So do not read it, except perhaps to pass it on! However, if something seems missing in your life, this book is for you. If you are looking for more of that mysterious something that will elevate your life to its highest level, read on!

This is a book about you. Very few people take the time to find out who they really are. As a result they live far below their potential. Most people have been molded by their parents, friends, teachers and often religious institutions. They were conditioned to conform and fit in to the crowd and not rise above it. This book is about breaking that mold to discover a wild, open range of possibilities.

We are far more capable and complex than we could ever imagine. However, too many people are bound by the chains of fear, lack of knowledge and low expectations. They may have low self-esteem. Some have been emotionally damaged through abuse and neglect. They are caught in a vicious cycle of unfulfilling mediocrity. Every day through their words and actions they are reinforcing the trap in which they find themselves. There is no joy. There is a vacuum inside that many try to fill in unsatisfying or unhealthy ways that do not last.

No more! This is a book that can set you free! Chapter by chapter, I will lead you through new ways of perceiving, thinking and acting. I will help you discover the person you were created to be.

The principles in this book are not new, but are timeless. I have taken knowledge of ancient sages, and added to it the latest that science has discovered about the mysterious quantum energies that power our universe. I have sourced a number of different authors to bring you the best of today’s knowledge and the wisdom of the ages. I have quoted successful people who have used these principles and found they work. I have added to all of this the insights I have learned over my forty years of being a counsellor, teacher and spiritual leader. I am grateful to each one who has gone before me and fed into my life the amazing truths that I now pass on to you.

This is not a religious book but it contains deep spiritual principles. It is not a psychological book but, if followed, it will strengthen and heal your soul. It is not a humanist book, but it elevates humanity to a place far beyond this primordial life. It is not a book about relationships but it will help to strengthen virtually every relationship you have.

It is my sincere wish that as you read this book, you will experience transformation. Whatever your lot in life, there are always higher places to explore. Take your time. Implement the principles found in each chapter. It may be difficult at first, but as you practice every day these life changing principles, they will become as natural as breathing. If you think you can, you can!

Here’s to the first day of the rest of your life!

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” Dr. Seuss

Congratulations! You won the lottery!
I can already envision the look of confusion on your face at reading this statement; unless of course you really did win a lottery. Not that I am clairvoyant, but I do know that you, dear reader, have won the big prize. You made it to planet earth!

In the humdrum of ordinary living, with its stresses and challenges, you may not realize this. You may be taking the Big Prize for granted, or may not even be aware that you won it. But you did! You beat the odds!

Consider for a moment the odds of winning the lottery Mega Million. Players pick five numbers from 1 to 70 and a Mega number of 1 to 25. The odds of winning the jackpot are now 1 in 300 million! However, the odds of you being conceived on the special occasion that made YOU are upward to one in 450 billion! That is a thousand times slimmer than winning the Mega Millions Lottery!

What are the odds that events in history would work out so exactly that each of your ancestors would come into being in the same way; that they would meet in exactly the way they did, and they would produce the next generation in your ancestry line on the very night that would eventually make you? It is safe to say that such odds are in the trillions and virtually incalculable.

Bill Perkins illustrates the odds of one in 100 trillion. “Suppose we filled the entire State of Texas with 100 trillion silver dollars. That would make the entire state about two feet deep in coins. Then we mark only one coin. Next we stir-up the state full of coins so they are thoroughly mixed and random. The marked coin could be anywhere in the state in the two foot deep coins. Finally we blindfold a man and let him travel the entire state to choose one random coin. What would be the odds of him finding the marked coin in one try? There is virtually no chance.” You are that coin!

Everybody dreams of finding a lost treasure. Mel Fisher was no exception. He actually did! Stacy Conradt reports, ‘In 1622, a fleet of Spanish ships battled a hurricane and lost, settling at the bottom of the sea among the Florida Keys. This included Nuestra Señora de Atocha, “Our Lady of Atocha,” which was carrying copper, silver, gold, tobacco, gems, and jewelry. The Spanish tried and failed to recover the lost valuables, so the wreck remained in the deep until 1985, when treasure hunter Mel found it after years of searching. The “Atocha Mother Lode” amounted to more than 40 tons of silver and gold, including Colombian emeralds, 1000 silver bars, artifacts made of precious metals, and more than 100,000 pieces of eight. So far, the spoils have reached about 450 million dollars’i Mel hit the jackpot! However, as amazing as this is, you and I have a treasure far more valuable! For many, however, this treasure remains lost.

It is strange where many people place their priorities. They will pay millions for yellow metal, yet fail to value the greatest treasure of all: themselves. They will spend all their time pursuing material things and miss out on the real riches they already own. The richest thing that you will ever own in this life is YOU! You are beyond price. The treasure of the Atocha is simply made up of metal and stone. You are a living, sentient being; capable of more than you could ever know. You have gifts yet undiscovered. You are alive, and aware of yourself and your surroundings. You can reason and love and hate. You live in a body that is more wondrous than the most complex of machines. If NASA were to spend billions of dollars sending an expedition to some far planet, and if they were to find someone like you living there, they would consider they hit the jackpot, and the money was well spent!

You and I have one guaranteed shot of experiencing life on this planet. It is now. This is your moment. Your being here is a gift whose price is beyond measure. Your life is more precious than all of the diamonds in all of the mines and in all of the jewelry worn by all the men and women in the world today.

Whatever mysterious force caused the creation of the material universe, condensed star dust into our sun and its planets, sparked life into existence on the third planet from the sun and caused such ideal ‘Goldilocks’ conditions to be just right for that life, including us, to flourish; caused you to happen! Let’s face it. Our being here is at the very least an unsolvable mystery and at the most nothing short of miraculous.

The most valuable house in this world you will ever own is your body. Yet how many of us neglect or even abuse this amazing temple we live in? If we could only awaken to the amazing wonder of us, we would be more mindful of the things we eat, the exercise we get and the care we take of our physical selves.

Take, for example, the wonder of sight. Sometimes I pause in the midst of my day in awe. I may see a sunset. What amazes me is not only the beauty of that vista, but the marvel that creation has fitted me with a part of my body, my eyes, that detect photons, adjust for various light conditions, focus to account for distance, translate the photons into electric signals and send them to my brain. My brain then reproduces the image first detected by my eyes. I do not ‘see’ the world. I have an image inside my brain that reproduces its exact image. What an amazingly complex digital camera that I have built into my body. And I have two of them! My brain puts the two images together so that I am able to see in 3D!

In the old question, ‘If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it does it make a sound?’, the answer is no. It takes other parts of our bodies, our ears, to detect vibrations in the air. Using tiny little filaments in our inner ears, they turn the vibrations into electrical signals and send them to our brains, which then interpret them for us as sound. What an amazingly complex audio system!

The same kind of marvels can be described for virtually every part of our bodies. It is sad that often we do not realize the treasure we have until we lose it. Andre Bocelli, the famous tenor, had limited sight as a boy until the day he got hit in the head with a soccer ball. The light when out completely. He learned to live the rest of his life in the dark.

Amazingly, our physical selves are the least wondrous thing about us. We are so much more than the bodies we live in. There is the wonder of our brains; that grey matter between our ears. Science First reports, “The human brain weighs 3 pounds. It comprises 60% of fat and is one of the fattiest organs in the human body. The human brain has the capacity to generate approximately 23 watts of power when awake. That is enough to power the small light bulb in your refrigerator!” According to computer scientists at Stanford University, a robot with a processor that is virtually as intelligent as the human brain would require at least 10 megawatts of electricity to operate properly.“Of the total blood and oxygen that is produced in our body, the brain gets 20% of it. The blood vessels that are present in the brain are almost 100,000 miles in length. There are 100 billion neurons present in the brain. In early pregnancy, the neurons develop at an alarming rate of 250,000 per minute. As we grow older, we are unable to remember new things. According to the researchers in the US it is because the brain is unable to filter and remove old memories which prevent it from absorbing new ideas; which may explain why we get set in our ways and closed to new ideas.”

As we take stock of our physical selves, we cannot help but realize that we are rich beyond measure. What is the value of sight, or of hearing? They are priceless. Our brains are worth more than the fastest, most powerful computer known today. It is no wonder that long before modern science analyzed how our bodies work, a young shepherd boy reflected on these things and concluded, “I am awesome and wonderfully made.”

There is more to you yet. You and I are not just a collection of neurons, blood vessels and fleshy tissue. In chapter three, I describe how we have a hidden energy, that brings with it unlimited potential and ability.

We humans are the highest known sentient beings in the physical universe. Just look what we are accomplishing collectively. From great architecture to wonderful music, from jet planes to artificial intelligence, evidence abounds that we are an amazing race. You, too, have the tools to be whatever you want to be and to accomplish great things. Don’t waste this moment of existence on this beautiful blue planet!

Sadly, many people live with no clue as to the amazing gift they have been given. They live their lives with eyes bent toward a menial terrestrial existence. They seldom look up with wonder and see the billions of stars from which they were spawned. They go through life complaining. They throw away day after precious day on mundane things. They abuse the bodies that keep them alive with drugs, or bad food, or other habits that will shorten their lives dramatically.

Take Sandra (not her real name). Sandra is a young woman in her early thirties. She suffers from acute depression and hides herself away from the world. She spends all her days gaming on her computer. She probably has no awareness that she won the lottery and has made no effort to collect her prize. That prize is the wonder and joy of living! It is seeing amazing sunsets. It is living and laughing with good friends and being aware of how rich we really are.

There are many people like Sandra. I see them every day on the downtown streets of city where I live. These are people so full of potential who could accomplish amazing things. Instead they have given themselves over to addictions and lifestyles that leave them homeless and destitute. Sometimes I want to shake them and say “Wake up! Don’t you know what a gift you have been given? Don’t throw another day of it away!”

Perhaps you, too, need a little shaking up. Consider this book your alarm clock. You have already taken the first step out of mediocrity by picking up this book. As you read on, it is my desire that you will shake off the bonds of lethargy and awaken to the person who you were really meant to be.

Each of us was born with virtually unlimited potential. We were created to have rich and full lives in spite of the challenges that each of us face. Yet most people settle for so much less. It is as if they are sleepwalking and unaware to the wonder of who they can be and what they have been given.

I heard the story of an elephant in India. It was confined to a small area by the most flimsy of chains strapped to its ankle. A visitor asked the attendant what kept the elephant there. Didn’t it know it was an incredibly powerful creature and that could easily break that chain? The attendant answered that from the time it was a baby elephant it was confined by that chain. At first it tried hard to escape but its baby strength was no match for the chain. Eventually it gave up and the idea that it could never break the chain was firmly implanted in its brain. After that it never tried, even after it became an adult and had more than enough strength to break free. You may be like that elephant. You may feel confined with chains that keep you from soaring and fulfilling your most secret dreams. The good news is that you are far stronger than those chains! You have the power to break free and let your spirit soar!

In this book you will learn the wonder of who you really are. You will find that your inner desires and dreams actually mean something. They are not wistful longings but expressions of your amazing inner self trying to get out! You will be given the tools you need to break the chain that confines you. To use another analogy, you are a butterfly. You were not meant to munch your life away as a caterpillar. Nor were you meant to be confined forever in a cocoon. Your wings were created with astounding beauty. You were meant to fly!

My partner loves to hit the snooze button. He sets it an hour before he must get up and hits it multiple times. It drives me crazy but I put up with it because it is what he needs. This book is a wake up call. Some who read it will want to leap out of bed and start really living for the first time. Others will want to hit the snooze button and say, ‘Yes I need to wake up but let me snooze just a little longer. Let me hold on to my mediocrity because it is so easy to drowse in it.’ You may even set this book down and plan to read it at a future time. However, procrastination is a thief. Do not let it rob you of your great prize.

What do you value most in this world?

How familiar are you with your ancestry and heritage?

How do you feel about yourself?

What things do you do for self-care?
